Litter Drey for Squirrels

Product information "Litter Drey for Squirrels"

Create a safe home for our nimble friends!
Few animals awakes so much enthusiasm in us as the diurnal tree imp. The Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) that lives in Germany can be found equally in urban and in rural areas and has many different fur colours – from light brown to red to dark brown. In dormant phases and to rear young animals, it withdraws into so-called “dreys” (stick nests), of which it makes several: There are summer, winter and litter dreys, some animals also differentiate between day and night housing. All dreys have in common that they have two (to three) exits, which are used for fast escape in case of pending danger. Squirrels need our help, because this animal species also depends on possibilities to retreat in a world that is increasingly fragmented for animals. Whereas Squirrels used to have their young once or twice a year, it now often has three litters a year due to climate change. Especially during the sensitive phase of rearing their young, a safe place is vital to protect the animals from their enemies. We humans also represent danger with our large traffic volumes and by increasing the scarcity of habitats for wild animals.

Squirrels find protection in the Litter Drey, it is a place in which they can give birth to their young, sleep and rest. The drey has two entrance/exit holes and a balcony where the young can start their initial climbing attempts. The roof is roughened to provide grip for the animals.

The role of the Squirrel in nature: The agile rodents have an important function in propagating tree seeds and nuts. By collecting and hiding food in different areas, Squirrels help to spreading plant seeds in the surroundings in diverse ways.

Working with the squirrel rescue association, Eichhörnchenhilfe Stuttgart, we have developed two Squirrel Houses: a special, more spacious litter drey and a drey inhabited by young animals outside of their rearing. The Squirrel Drey should be attached to a tree in a place facing away from the rain at a height of at least four metres and should always provide the animals with the opportunity to escape. This includes adjacent trees or bridging the distance to them with climbing ropes.
