The survival of swifts in our towns and cities is now under threat. These birds occupy crevices and cavities in buildings where they raise their young. When builings are renovated these breeding sites are often destroyed, and are not available at all on new buildings.
Siting & positioning:
The access hole should be sited at least 6 to 7 m above the ground. Please ensure that birds entering and leaving have
unobstructed access. Swifts are very sociable birds, forming colonies that vary widely in size. It is therefore advantageous to install several nesting boxes.
Inside buildings, e.g. on sills or in roof Spaces. Alternatively on the outside of buildings, e.g. or flat roofs or under overhanging eaves.
Cleaning and inspection:
If needed it is very easy to gain access to the box, by simply raising the flap at the back. When occupied by swifts the box should not normally require cleaning.
